Bettye Walters

November 9, 1954 — November 29, 2023

Aberdeen

Bettye Maud Vowell Walters passed away in the early morning hours of November 29, 2023, at the age of 69. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Pearl Walters, her father James C. Walters, and her brother Carl Walters, Jr. She leaves surviving her a niece Chasity Cherubin of Columbia, South Carolina and nephew, C.W. Walters of Aberdeen, Mississippi. She also leaves behind a host of friends, especially the girls from Eutaw Construction, Ms Crystal Gazaway, Ms. Becky Gill and Ms. Ginny Pounders.

Bettye and her family moved to Aberdeen when she was young and she has called Aberdeen her home, ever since. She has been a faithful member of the community, and First Christian Church of Aberdeen for as long as anyone can remember.  Everyone in town knew Bettye. Her friendly spirit and smiling face could be found almost daily on the streets of Aberdeen. Bettye worked at Lasky’s Department Store until they closed, at Carolyn’s Dress Shop and volunteered at the Aberdeen Animal Shelter Thrift Store throughout her adult life.  An avid walker, she was often found pushing her beloved dog, Bambi, through the streets in her stroller.

Bettye was always dressed to impress. She often quoted her mother, Mrs. Mary Pearl, by saying: “Never go to town not dressed in your best!” In addition to her artistic flair for dressing in Country Western attire, Bettye was an impressive sketch artist. Known mostly for her portraits of western movie stars and country western singers, Bettye also had a knack for drawing Superman cartoon images and humbling portraits of Jesus.

Bettye never met a stranger, and her love of writing developed a pen pal relationship with one of her favorite stars, Susan Sarandon. She also corresponded with Morgan Freeman and most recently Ivanka Trump. Bettye had a love for Elvis Presley, MSU athletics, Cracker Barrel, America, and everything Christmas. She had a gift for making you smile, speaking her mind and reminding you that happiness is a decision, not a circumstance. Those who knew her were blessed because of it and the streets of Aberdeen will never be the same without her.
