Evelyn Simmons Cowan, aged 94, passed away peacefully at home on September 28, 2024, in Aberdeen, MS. Born on December 15, 1929 in Ellisville, MS, Evelyn was known for her vibrant and outgoing personality, often described as the life of the party and someone who never met a stranger. Her zest for life was evident in her love for travel, exploring the world through numerous cruises and adventures in her motorhome.

Evelyn was a dedicated professional, starting her career as a model for several local businesses, and seamstress for Singer before venturing into her own embroidery business. She served as the Business Manager for Simmons Wrecker, Inc. in Lauderdale, MS, showcasing her versatile skills and entrepreneurial spirit. Her academic pursuits took her to Jones County Junior College, where she played on the women’s’ basketball team, laying a strong foundation for her varied career.

Family was the cornerstone of Evelyn's life. She is survived by her husband, James Durrett “Jimmy D.” Cowan, Sr.; children, Ricky L. Simmons (Beverly), Debbie S. Hutto (Scott), stepchildren Tracy C. Randall (Steve), and Cindy Camp (Jeff); and James Durrett “Jimbo” Cowan, Jr. (Karen). Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Heather S. Jones (Ben), Dusty L. Simmons (Ashley), Melissa A. Hutto, Mark S. Hutto (Hope), Josh Randall (Alexandria), Jamie Randall, Candace C. Arnold (Jeffery), and Rachel C. Callahan (Ryan), Grace E. Cowan, and James Durrett “Trey” Cowan, III, and multiple great-grandchildren. Evelyn was preceded in death by her first husband, Roger L. Simmons, and sons Glenn Simmons, and Vick Simmons.

An avid supporter of Mississippi State University athletics, she loved MSU baseball, basketball, and football. Evelyn also enjoyed playing golf and was a passionate NASCAR fan. She was a long-standing member of the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, MS, where she participated actively in the church community. Evelyn was a member of the Aberdeen County Club Ladies’ Golf Association and was an active member of the Red Hat Society. While in Lauderdale, she was a member of the Meridian Traveling B’s and served as president and lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Pi Sorority. Evelyn travelled all over the country with her daughter Debbie to various pageants and judged many pageants, including the Miss Mississippi pageant.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen, MS. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Evelyn will be laid to rest at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens in Meridian, MS, at 9:00 am on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the First United Methodist Church of Aberdeen, MS, or the Mississippi State University Foundation, honoring Evelyn's commitment to her faith and community. Her spirited presence and loving nature will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
