John Wayne Perkins, 78, passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026, at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. Born in New Brockton, AL on July 17, 1947, he was a son to Paul N. and Anne Ruth Carmichael Perkins. Wayne was a 1965 graduate of Aberdeen High School and attended IJC, Eastern Christian College, and Atlanta Christian College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era stationed in Germany. While in the service, he worked with the United States Military Liaison Mission, a liaison to the Soviet Army behind the Iron Curtain in Potsdam, Germany. In addition, he was part of the 223 National Guard in West Point, MS. Prior to his retirement, he worked in telecommunications as a network tech for Quest Communications. From 1981-2002, he lived in Rifle, CO, where he was on the Planning and Zoning Commission and the city council. He was a member of the American Legion Post 26 in Aberdeen and a life member USMLM Association. After retirement, he worked for many years at Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home. He worked in IT at BASF and he was an excellent gardener taking great pride in growing purple hull peas which was his specialty. He was member of Aberdeen Church of Christ.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Aberdeen Church of Christ with Jonathan Hagar and Pat Birkholz officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the service hour.
He is survived by Tuck Jones (Annette), their children, Reed Jones (Andrea) and Meme Aldridge (Ben), Pat Birkholz (Susie), stepdaughter, Tanya Johnson (Chris) and their children, Abby and Macy Pearson, known to them as ‘Paw Perk,’ Tommy Kirkpatrick, Louise Riley and her family, and a host of other friends, and the AHS Class of 1965.
Preceding him in death are his parents, and his sister, Paulette Perkins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pinevale Children’s Home, c/o Aberdeen Church of Christ.
