Peggy Butler Meux

ABERDEEN/TUPELO. On Thursday, May 26, 2022 our beloved Peggy Butler Meux passed away at the age of 96. She was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi on October 5, 1925 to Robert L. Butler and Willie Earrey Butler.

Peggy was a cheerleader at Aberdeen High School for four years (1939-1943), graduated in 1943, and was named Miss Aberdeen that same year. She attended Belhaven in Jackson for two years (1943-45), and then transferred and graduated from MSCW in Columbus. She would become a schoolteacher of 28 years, her proudest role next to being a mother. As a teacher, she cared for and encouraged hundreds of students across Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, and Mississippi. Her students loved "Miss M" and she loved them.

A military spouse for 26 years, Peggy traveled with her family cross-country and overseas. She made a home for her family in Washington State, South Carolina, Andover, England, Washington D.C., and Florida. She visited France, Germany, Spain, Scotland, and Wales. But the trips she looked forward to most were the summer visits to the Butler home at 210 High Street.

Peggy returned home to Aberdeen in 1985 to care for her parents; and lost them within a year or so from one another. We are grateful that Peggy passed in the home she grew up in, cared for by daughter Doris A. (“Dee”) Meux and sister Bobbye Lee Butler West. Peggy loved her birds, a good cup of coffee, her coloring studio, and the view of the world from her chair on the back porch. She often sent her coloring artwork to Bobby Lee’s Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church.

In addition to Bobbye Lee and Dee, Peggy is survived by her daughter Bette Lou Meux Solomon (William “Sandy”); granddaughter, Michelle Meux Smith (Chris); two great-grandchildren, Connor and Daniel; nieces Mary Beth Peel Williams (Mark) and Elaine Peel Roach (Karen York); and nephew, Charles Peel (Tammy).

Peggy was preceded in death by her son, William Leigh Meux; brother, O’Neil Butler and sister-in-law, Emily Butler; her granddaughter, Suzanne Leigh Meux; and brother-in-law, James West.

There will be a Memorial Service at 6:00 p.m., Thursday, June 2, 2022 at the Chapel of Tisdale-Lann Memorial Funeral Home in Aberdeen. She will be laid to rest beside her parents at Odd Fellows Rest Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy can be sent to the family at www.tisdalelannmemorialfh.com In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the First Baptist Church of Aberdeen.

Visitation will be at the funeral home prior to the service from 5 PM until 5:45 PM.

Mrs. Meux was kind to everyone and was a wonderful Home Economics teacher to eight grade girls.I remember sewing in her class and making lasagna! It was a great memory. I am so glad she was my teacher

Miss Peggy was always so nice. Me, my sister, and my brother, visited Aberdeen every summer to see our grandparents, but we would, always, also look forward to seeing Miss Peggy. She would always entertain us with funny stories, let us play with her dogs, all kinds of fun things and always with an amazing smile and upbeat, happy energy -- every summer. It doesn't sound like much, but as a kid it made lifelong memories for me and my siblings. Peggy will be missed. Praying for you and your family.

"Miss Peggy" as my brothers and I knew her, was the most joyful, bright person. Growing up, we visited our grandparents just about every summer and always looked forward to running two doors down to see Miss Peggy. She was always so happy to see us and it always felt like no time had passed since the last time we saw her. I will miss her dearly and will always remember her smile and those times. She was truly a wonderful person and had such a beautiful heart. Sending your family all the love and prayers.

I remember Mrs. Meux like it was yesterday when she was teaching Home Economics at SHS. She was a sweet, kind, gracious southern lady. Mrs. Meux bought Betty Lou's first horse from me! I started my first checking account with her deposit. She always made me feel welcomed in their home when I would visit or stay the night with Doris Ann. I have many fond memories eating there and having conversation with Mrs. Meux, Doris Ann, Bette Lou, Leigh, and The Colonel. She was a strong woman who appeared to be the rock of the family. She was blessed with a long, wonderful life. She may be gone but not forgotten. May her memories give you comfort at this time! Sending love and prayers, Nancy and Bubba Odham

Thank you for sharing your southern charm, beauty and joy for living large. The fabric of mine and hundreds of students at Sebring High in Sebring Florida was forever when you and your family became part of our family. The way you shared your self enabled so many to emulate and incorporate your style into ours. God bless you in your new home.
